The Angel of Rain and Sustenance
ميكائيل
Mika'il (Michael) is one of the greatest angels, named in the Quran right beside Jibril (2:98). If Jibril is charged with spiritual sustenance (the Revelation), Mika'il is charged with material sustenance: rain, vegetation, and everything that nourishes creatures, according to God's command. He is among the angels closest to God.
HIS NAME IN THE QURAN — Mika'il is one of the few angels explicitly named in the Quran. God says: 'Whoever is an enemy of Allah, His angels, His messengers, Gabriel and Michael — then surely Allah is an enemy of the disbelievers' (2:98). Being named alongside Jibril shows his high standing.
HIS FUNCTION — Mika'il is the angel charged with rain, clouds, vegetation, and the sustenance of creatures. He directs the water that falls from the sky and sends it where God commands. Where Jibril carries nourishment for souls (the Revelation), Mika'il watches over nourishment for bodies.
HIS RANK — A hadith reported by Aisha (Muslim) illuminates his place: when the Prophet ﷺ prayed at night, he began his invocation with: 'O Allah! Lord of Jibril, Mika'il and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and earth...' Scholars explain the order: Jibril cited first (charged with the Revelation, the heart of the religion), Israfil last (who will blow the Trumpet at the end of the world), and Mika'il between the two (charged with the sustenance of this lower world).
The name 'Michael' (Mikal) is in the Quran (2:98); his function (rain, sustenance) is reported by hadiths and scholarly teaching. The hadith of the night invocation (Jibril, Mika'il, Israfil) is in Sahih Muslim. Note: some very widespread details (e.g. 'Mika'il has not smiled since the creation of Hell,' or the exact order of creation of angels) come from accounts whose degree is not established; the site does not retain them.
Mika'il reminds us that sustenance — rain, food, life growing from the earth — is not the fruit of chance, but the work of an obedient angel executing God's command. Every drop of rain, every harvest, is a gift administered with order and measure. Behind what we call 'nature' lies the will and generosity of the Creator.
Que celui qui est l'ennemi d'Allah, de Ses anges, de Ses Messagers, de Gabriel et de Michaël, sache qu'Allah est l'ennemi des mécréants.
