The Uncle Who Watered the Pilgrims · Ancestor of the Abbasids

Al-Abbas (Uncle)

العباس بن عبد المطلب

Summary

Al-Abbas, paternal uncle of the Prophet ﷺ only slightly older than him, held the honour of watering pilgrims in Mecca. Long cautious, he eventually embraced Islam fully and became a respected Companion; he is the ancestor of the Abbasid dynasty.

The Story

Before his public conversion, Al-Abbas was present at the second pledge of al-'Aqaba, where the Medinans committed to protecting the Prophet ﷺ: he spoke up to test their sincerity and ensure they grasped the weight of their commitment.

He openly joined Islam around the conquest of Mecca. The Prophet ﷺ honoured him and watched over him. From his descendants was born, more than a century later, the Abbasid dynasty, which ruled the Muslim world for a long time.

The Lesson

Al-Abbas shows that the path to faith can be gradual, and that God gives each person time to mature their conviction. His story also connects the earliest Islam to one of its greatest dynasties.
