The Inspired Insect Whose Honey Is a Healing
النحل
The Quran cites the bee as a sign of God. It says God inspired it to build homes in mountains, trees and trellises, then eat of all fruits. From its belly comes a drink of varied colours in which there is healing for people. A small creature, guided by God, producing medicine for humans.
In the surah that bears its name, the Quran dwells on the bee as one of the most wondrous signs of creation. The text uses a striking word: God inspired (awha) the bee — the same root as prophetic revelation, but here an instinctive inspiration placed in its nature.
This inspiration guides it: to build homes in mountains, trees and what people trellis, then follow its Lord's paths with ease, drawing from flowers and nectar.
From this work comes a drink of varied colours, which the Quran says contains healing for people. It concludes: 'In that is a sign for people who reflect.' How can this tiny creature perform work of such consistency and produce this marvel? For the believer, the answer lies in God's guidance.
Honey is not confined to this world: the Quran describes Paradise as having rivers of pure water, milk, wine, and purified honey (Surah Muhammad 47:15). The Quran does not specify the source of this heavenly honey nor state it comes from bees — it is a pleasure God creates, whose nature only He knows.
The word 'inspiration' (wahy) to the bee does not mean it receives prophetic revelation: scholars clarify it is an instinctive inspiration placed in its nature — the Arabic root encompasses multiple meanings. The Quran says honey contains healing for people; the text remains general and specifies no particular illness. There are rivers of honey in Paradise (47:15) without specifying they come from bees. We report these two truths separately without inventing a connection.
The bee teaches order and giving in service of good: guided by God, it works without stopping, draws only from the pure, and leaves behind only the pure and beneficial. It is an invitation to reflect on God's wisdom in creation.
