The Celestial Ka'ba Frequented by Angels
البيت المعمور
Al-Bayt al-Ma'mur is a house in the seventh heaven directly above the Ka'ba in Mecca. God swore by it in the Quran (52:4). It is the pilgrimage of angels: seventy thousand angels enter it every day and never return to it again — because of the immense number of angels. The Prophet ﷺ saw it on the night of the Ascension.
Its Quranic Name — God swore in Surah at-Tur by a series of sacred things: 'By the Mount, and a written Book... and al-Bayt al-Ma'mur and the elevated canopy' (52:1-5). The oath by it is evidence of its great importance.
What Is It? — Al-Bayt al-Ma'mur is the celestial Ka'ba at the top of the heavens: a sanctuary in the seventh heaven directly above the Ka'ba (some narrations say if it fell it would fall on the Ka'ba). It is the Ka'ba of the inhabitants of the heaven.
The Seventy Thousand Angels — on the night of the Ascension the Prophet ﷺ reached the seventh heaven and saw al-Bayt al-Ma'mur. He reported (Bukhari and Muslim): 'Then al-Bayt al-Ma'mur was raised to me; seventy thousand angels pray in it every day; when they leave they do not return to it — it is their last time.' That is, a new group of seventy thousand every day without the previous ones returning. Since creation these numbers give a staggering sense of the number of angels.
Its Connection to the Ka'ba — just as humans circumambulate the Ka'ba on earth, angels come to al-Bayt al-Ma'mur in the heaven. Two sanctuaries facing each other, one above the other: one for humans and the other for angels.
Al-Bayt al-Ma'mur is Quranic (52:4) — this is established. The detail of seventy thousand angels daily comes from the authentic hadith of the Ascension (Bukhari no. 3207 and Muslim no. 164). Its identification in the seventh heaven directly above the Ka'ba comes from hadiths and commentary. A good example of the distinction: the place is Quranic and the number of angels is prophetic.
Al-Bayt al-Ma'mur presents a stunning image: while believers circumambulate the Ka'ba on earth, tens of thousands of angels worship directly above it without stopping. Worship never ceases in the universe for a moment. And the ever-rotating number of angels beyond reckoning recalls the immensity of God's creation of which we perceive only an atom.
