The Beast of the Earth is a wondrous creature the Quran announces will emerge at the end of times. It speaks to people — something an animal does not ordinarily do — and according to the Sunnah distinguishes between believers and disbelievers. Its emergence is one of the major signs indicating the approaching Hour and the closing of the door of repentance.
The Quran announces in a single verse (27:82) that when corruption spreads and people's faith in God's signs weakens, a beast will emerge from the earth and speak to them. The mere fact that a beast speaks and reasons will be a manifest sign from God.
The Sunnah clarifies its role: it visibly distinguishes between believers and disbelievers by marking them so people recognise each other by this mark. According to a hadith reported by Muslim, the Beast is one of three after which 'no soul's faith will benefit it if it had not believed before' — along with the rising of the sun from the west and the Dajjal.
It is among the ten major signs mentioned in the famous hadith of Hudhayfa ibn Asid (Muslim): the Dajjal, the smoke, the Beast and the rising of the sun from the west and the descent of 'Isa and Gog and Magog and three eclipses and a fire from Yemen.
Three levels worth distinguishing in the spirit of precise information: What is established (Quran + authentic Sunnah): the Beast exists, will emerge from the earth, speak to people and distinguish believers from disbelievers. Its place among the ten major signs of the Hour is established by Muslim. What is less clear: its physical description (form and size) is not detailed in authentic sources. Some narrations attribute to it the staff of Moses and the seal of Solomon or three appearances — these details come from hadiths of varying degrees and need investigation. What should not be done: identifying the Beast with a specific contemporary animal, technology or phenomenon. Those are speculations with no basis in the texts. The Beast recalls that God's signs will become undeniable — but at that point those who were negligent will have missed the opportunity of free faith. The message is a call to faith and good deeds before the major signs occur, as hadiths teach: 'Hasten to good deeds before six things...'
وَإِذَا وَقَعَ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَخْرَجْنَا لَهُمْ دَآبَّةً مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ تُكَلِّمُهُمْ
