The Sign Sent to Thamud
When the prophet Salih was sent to Thamud, God brought forth a she-camel as a miraculous sign. The people were to let her graze and drink freely, sharing the water with her. They hamstrung her in defiance, and the punishment came upon them.
Thamud, heirs of the 'Ad, were in prosperity, carving their homes in rock. God sent them one of their own, Salih, calling them to worship God alone. The sign of his prophethood was a she-camel that appeared by God's leave.
The command was clear: let her graze freely in God's land and share the well's water — one day for her, one day for them. Salih warned them explicitly not to touch her with harm.
But the notables plotted out of arrogance and defiance. One of them hamstrung the she-camel and killed her — an open challenge to the divine warning. Salih announced to them that punishment would come within three days. It came: a thunderbolt and earthquake, and the people of Thamud were found lifeless in their dwellings.
The she-camel of Salih is not in the Quranic narrative an ordinary animal: she is a sign, a miracle to test the people. The Quran does not dwell on her physical description (details sometimes told like her great size and emergence from rock come from commentators' accounts, not the Quranic text itself). The essence of the message lies elsewhere: she was a test of obedience and respect in which the people failed out of arrogance.
The she-camel teaches that God's signs deserve respect, not defiance. The sharing of water was a test of justice and humility; her hamstringing was a collective transgression. The event also warns of a recurring dynamic: a minority committed the crime but the whole people through their support or silence bore the responsibility.
