The Beloved Daughter of the Prophet ﷺ
فاطمة الزهراء
Fatima az-Zahra was the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ and Khadija, the closest to his heart. Wife of Ali ibn Abi Talib and mother of Hasan and Husayn, she is a central figure of the Prophet's ﷺ family, loved and honoured throughout Islam.
Fatima was the youngest of the Prophet's ﷺ daughters by Khadija, and the one he was closest to. The Prophet ﷺ said that Fatima was a part of him: what grieved her grieved him, what delighted her delighted him.
She grew up in Mecca during the difficult years of persecution, sharing her father's trials. After the Hijra, she married Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Prophet's ﷺ cousin, in a union of great simplicity. From this marriage were born Hasan and Husayn, the two beloved grandsons of the Prophet ﷺ, as well as their sisters.
Fatima led a modest and industrious life, attending to household tasks herself. Her piety, patience, and modesty made her a model. The Prophet ﷺ showered her with tenderness until the end of his life. She was, it is said, the first of his family to join him after his death, following him by only a few months.
The Prophet ﷺ confided to Fatima that she would be 'the mistress of the women of Paradise' and the first of his family to join him (Bukhari no. 3624; al-Mustadrak vol.3 p.164). The hadith also names them together: 'It suffices you among the women of the world: Maryam, Khadija, Fatima and Asiya, wife of Pharaoh' (Tirmidhi, from Anas — authenticated).
Fatima teaches dignity in simplicity and the strength of the family bond. Loved by the Prophet ﷺ above all others, she lived neither in luxury nor ease, showing that true nobility is that of the heart and piety, not of possessions.
