The First Woman — Adam's Wife

Hawwa (Eve)

حواء

Summary

Eve (Hawwa) is the first woman, created as Adam's wife and companion. The Quran always presents her alongside Adam: together in Paradise, together tempted by Satan, together responsible for the fault, and together forgiven after repenting. From them descends all of humanity.

The Story

God created Adam, then brought forth from him his wife, 'that he might find tranquility in her' (7:189). The couple was settled in Paradise, where God permitted them to eat freely from all its fruits, except those of one specific tree.

Satan, their declared enemy, tempted them both. He whispered to them that the forbidden tree would give them immortality or make them like angels. Beguiled, they both ate from it — and immediately their nakedness became apparent to them, which they covered with Paradise's leaves.

An important point in the Quranic account: the fault is SHARED. The Quran does not lay the responsibility on the woman alone. The verb is in the dual ('they both ate'), and together they acknowledged their wrong through this beautiful prayer: 'Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers' (7:23). God forgave them, then sent them down to earth, where the story of humanity began.

Three important points, faithful to the sources: The Quran NEVER names Eve. It says 'Adam's wife,' 'his wife' (zawj). The name Hawwa comes from tradition. A narration (from Ibn 'Abbas and Ibn Mas'ud) says Adam called her this because she was created from a living being (hayy) — but this account is not in the most rigorous collections and belongs to commentators' traditions. The name is universal, but its source remains honest: tradition, not a first-rank hadith. Notable difference from the biblical account: the Quran does NOT say Eve tempted Adam or that she alone is responsible. Responsibility is shared (verbs in dual), and in Surah Ta-Ha (20:121), it is Adam who is specifically named as having disobeyed. The idea of an original 'feminine' fault is not in the Quran. Similarly, the idea that Eve was created 'from Adam's rib' does not come from the Quran (which only says 'from a single being'). It comes from later accounts parallel to the biblical text. We note it as tradition, not Quranic data. After the fault come repentance and forgiveness: the Quranic account is not a condemnation, but a fall followed by a rising.

The Lesson

Eve teaches the shared dignity of the first couple: created for tranquility and mutual companionship, she is Adam's equal in trial as in repentance. Her story also teaches that error is not an end: acknowledged with humility and entrusted to God, it opens the door of forgiveness. The prayer of Adam and Eve (7:23) remains a model of repentance for all their descendants.
