He Who Refused to Prostrate — Out of Pride

Iblis

Summary

Iblis is the figure of pride and revolt. When God commanded the angels to prostrate before Adam, Iblis — who was among them without being an angel — refused, claiming superiority as he was created from fire. For this pride he was cursed, and swore to lead people astray until the end of times.

The Story

When God created Adam, He commanded the angels to prostrate before him as a sign of honour. All obeyed, except Iblis. The Quran specifies he was from among the jinn, created from fire, and not among the angels.

Questioned by God about his refusal, Iblis replied in pride: 'I am better than him: You created me from fire and created him from clay.' This reasoning — judging one's worth by the material of one's origin — was his downfall: he placed his own judgement above God's command.

Cursed and expelled, Iblis then asked for a respite until the Day of Resurrection, and swore: 'I will stand before people to turn them from Your path... I will surely lead their descendants astray, except for a few.' Thus the Quran presents Satan not as a force equal to God, but as a declared enemy of humanity whose only power is suggestion — which the believer can always repel.

The Lesson

Iblis embodies the danger of pride: his fall did not come from lack of knowledge (he knew God) but from a refusal to bow. He teaches that pride can destroy even one who knows, and that comparing one's worth to another's by origin or material is a trap. The Quran also reminds us that Satan has no power of compulsion: he suggests, but does not force.

Quran Verses
