Jalut (Goliath)

Jalut is the powerful and feared enemy leader that the children of Israel confronted under the command of Talut. His defeat at the hands of the young David, despite his strength, illustrates that brute force does not overcome faith and God's help.

Jalut commanded a powerful army, and his reputation was terrifying. When Talut's troops saw him, some lost heart: 'We have no power today against Goliath and his forces.'

But the most steadfast believers responded with these now-famous words: 'How many times, by God's will, has a small force overcome a large army!' They implored God to give them patience and steadfastness.

It was then that the young David, still unknown, faced the giant and killed him. Through this victory, God granted David kingship and wisdom. Jalut's strength had not saved him.

Jalut teaches that strength and the fear one inspires count for nothing before God's will. His defeat at the hands of a young man recalls that appearances of power deceive, and that victory comes to those who place their trust in God with steadfastness.

كَم مِّن فِئَةٍ قَلِيلَةٍ غَلَبَتْ فِئَةً كَثِيرَةً بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ

Lorsque Saül et ses troupes se mirent en marche, celui-ci leur dit : « Allah va éprouver votre obéissance par une rivière. Quiconque s’y désaltérera ne fera pas partie de mes fidèles, tandis que celui qui s’en abstiendra, ou se contentera de boire l’eau qu’il aura puisée dans le creux de la main, en fera partie. » Mais, à l’exception d’une poignée d’hommes, tous s’y désaltérèrent. Lorsque Saül et les croyants qui l’accompagnaient eurent traversé la rivière, certains dirent : « Nous ne sommes pas en mesure aujourd’hui d’affronter Goliath et ses troupes. » A quoi répliquèrent ceux qui avaient la certitude de rencontrer leur Seigneur : « Que de fois, par la volonté d’Allah, une petite troupe a triomphé d’une grande armée. Allah est avec ceux qui font preuve de constance. »

وَقَتَلَ دَاوُودُ جَالُوتَ

Par la volonté d’Allah, ils mirent en déroute leurs ennemis. Goliath fut tué par David auquel Allah accorda royauté et sagesse, et auquel Il enseigna ce qu’Il voulut. Si Allah ne repoussait pas une partie des hommes par une autre, la terre serait livrée au chaos mais Allah, en vérité, est toute bonté envers Ses créatures.
