She Whose Marriage Freed a Tribe

Juwayriya

جويرية بنت الحارث

Summary

Juwayriya bint al-Harith was the daughter of a chief of the Banu al-Mustaliq tribe. Her marriage to the Prophet ﷺ had an unexpectedly beneficial consequence: it led to the liberation of many captives from her tribe.

The Story

Juwayriya was the daughter of the chief of the Banu al-Mustaliq. After a battle, she was taken captive. She came to ask the Prophet ﷺ for help, and he offered to marry her, which she accepted.

When the Companions learned that the Banu al-Mustaliq were now connected to the Prophet ﷺ by marriage, they freed all their captives from that tribe, considering it improper to keep in captivity the relatives of the Prophet's ﷺ family. Thus, Juwayriya's marriage freed around a hundred families. Aisha would say of her that she was a woman of great blessing for her people.

On the number of wives: contrary to a common misconception, Islam does not permit an unlimited number of wives. For believers, the Quran sets a maximum of four, subject to the condition of equal treatment, and recommends taking only one if there is fear of injustice (Surah an-Nisa, 4:3). The Prophet ﷺ held a special status (Surah al-Ahzab, 33:50); God then forbade him from marrying additional women (33:52), thus fixing the number of his wives.

The Lesson

Juwayriya teaches how a single act can overflow in goodness for an entire community. Her marriage, beyond her personal life, became a source of freedom and reconciliation between peoples.
