The Falsely Accused — The Scapegoat in the Story of Yusuf

The Wolf of Yusuf

الذِّئْب

Summary

The wolf of Yusuf is not an active character but a lie. Ya'qub expresses his fear that a wolf might eat him (12:13); then his brothers use it as a pretext, after throwing Yusuf into the well: 'A wolf ate him' (12:17). The truth is that the wolf did nothing — Yusuf is alive. The wolf became the symbol of the innocent unjustly accused.

The Story

The wolf appears in the story of Yusuf not as an actor but as a lie. When Yusuf's brothers asked their father Ya'qub to send him with them, Ya'qub said: 'I fear that a wolf should eat him while you are heedless of him' (12:13).

The brothers seized this opportunity. After throwing Yusuf into the well, they returned weeping saying 'A wolf ate him' (12:17), presenting his shirt stained with false blood.

Yet the wolf committed nothing: Yusuf is alive, and the accusation is a mere pretext to cover their crime. 'The wolf of Yusuf' has become in culture a symbol of every innocent person unjustly accused.

The Quran never describes the wolf: in the story it is a father's fear (12:13) then a sons' lie (12:17). No wolf ever touched Yusuf. A popular narration about 'a wolf brought before Ya'qub who spoke to confirm his innocence' belongs to Isra'iliyyat and has no basis in the Quran; we do not establish it.

The Lesson

The wolf of Yusuf teaches caution about false accusations: often an innocent person bears a crime committed by another. But the lie does not last — Yusuf was alive and the truth was eventually revealed. An invitation never to judge anyone on mere appearance or rumour.

Quran Verses

12:13

Ils dirent : « Père ! Nous sommes allés rivaliser d'adresse, en laissant Joseph près de nos effets. C'est alors qu'un loup est venu le dévorer. Tu ne nous croiras pas, même si nous disons la vérité ! »

12:17
