The Prophet of the Corrupt City
لوط
Lut, nephew of Ibrahim, was sent to the inhabitants of a city who had devised indecencies unknown before them. He called them to fear God and to abandon their vices.
Lut exhorted his people at length to renounce their immorality and brigandage. But far from heeding him, his people threatened to expel him, mocking his purity.
Even his wife did not share his faith and betrayed his trust. When angels, sent in the guise of young men, came to his home, the city rushed over; Lut, overwhelmed, wanted to protect them.
Then God's punishment fell upon the corrupt city, while Lut and the believers were saved — except his wife, who remained behind with the others.
Lut teaches that faithfulness to God can require standing alone and upright before a society that has lost all bearings, even when the closest bonds fail.
