The Messenger of Allah · The Seal of the Prophets

Muhammad ﷺ

Summary

Muhammad ﷺ is the last of God's prophets and messengers, to whom the Quran was revealed. Born in Mecca around 570, orphaned early, he received the revelation at forty and transmitted, over twenty-three years, the message of God's oneness. The Quran presents him as a mercy to humanity and a beautiful example to follow.

The Story

Muhammad ﷺ was born in Mecca within the Quraysh tribe. Orphaned of his father before birth and of his mother at six, he was raised by his grandfather, then by his uncle Abu Talib. Known from a young age for his uprightness and honesty, he was nicknamed al-Amin, 'the trustworthy.'

At forty, while in retreat in the Cave of Hira', he received the first revelation through the angel Jibril: 'Read!' Shaken, he returned to his wife Khadija, who was the first to believe in him.

He called first privately, then openly, the Meccans to abandon their idols and worship God alone. He and the first believers endured persecution, mockery, and violence. After years of trials, he emigrated to Medina — the Hijra — where a Muslim community was able to form.

Despite imposed wars and hostility, he returned to Mecca at the head of his companions. Victorious, he entered the city with his head bowed in humility, and pardoned those very people who had persecuted him. He completed the transmission of the message, delivered his Farewell Sermon, and died in Medina around 632.

The Lesson

The life of Muhammad ﷺ teaches constancy in hardship and the greatness of forgiveness. Persecuted then victorious, he chose clemency over vengeance, and remained until the end a humble servant of God. His example unites firmness in faith with gentleness towards people.

Quran Verses
