The Tyrant Who Claimed to Give Life and Death

Nimrod

Summary

The Quran recounts a king's dispute with Ibrahim about God. Intoxicated by his power, this king also claimed to give life and death. Ibrahim silenced him with an unanswerable argument. Tradition identifies this king as Nimrod.

The Story

God had given this man kingship, but instead of being grateful for it, he used it to challenge Ibrahim. When Ibrahim said 'My Lord is the One who gives life and death,' the king retorted arrogantly: 'I too give life and death' — pardoning a death-row prisoner and executing an innocent, as if this equalled divine power.

Ibrahim did not take the bait. He shifted the debate to ground where no illusion was possible: 'God brings up the sun from the east; bring it up then from the west.' Before this challenge, the tyrant was left speechless, confounded. His pretension collapsed in an instant.

The Lesson

Nimrod embodies the pride of power that leads it to believe itself equal to God. His defeat teaches that truth needs no force to prevail: a single just argument suffices to confound the mightiest tyrant. Earthly power gives no right over truth.

Quran Verses
