Talha al-Khayr · One of the Ten Promised Paradise · "He Who Fulfilled His Vow"
طَلْحَة بن عُبَيْد الله
Talha ibn Ubaydillah, of the Banu Taym clan of Quraysh (that of Abu Bakr), was one of the very first Muslims and one of the ten promised Paradise. Nicknamed Talha al-Khayr ('the good') and Talha al-Fayyad ('the generous'), he distinguished himself above all at Uhud, where he defended the Prophet ﷺ. Hadith designates him as 'he who fulfilled his vow' (33:23) and 'a martyr walking on earth.' He was killed at the Battle of the Camel in year 36 of the Hijra.
Talha ibn Ubaydillah belonged to the Banu Taym of Quraysh — Abu Bakr's clan — and was one of the very first to embrace Islam. He was nicknamed Talha al-Khayr ('the good') and Talha al-Fayyad ('the generous'), so great were his piety and generosity.
On the day of Uhud, he defended the Prophet ﷺ at the risk of his life. The Prophet ﷺ said of him: 'Let whoever wishes to behold a martyr walking on earth look at Talha ibn Ubaydillah.'
This is his deepest connection to the Quran. When the verse was revealed: 'Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with God; some of them have fulfilled their vow...' (33:23), the Prophet ﷺ placed Talha among 'those who have fulfilled their vow.'
He is among the ten Companions whom the Prophet ﷺ named as promised Paradise. He was killed at the Battle of the Camel in year 36 of the Hijra. We report these facts without adjudicating the disputes of that time.
Talha is not named in the Quran. Verse 33:23 speaks, in general terms, of believers faithful to their covenant; it is hadith that places Talha among 'those who fulfilled their vow' (Tirmidhi), and that names him 'a martyr walking on earth' (Tirmidhi, from Jabir). He is also one of the ten promised Paradise (Tirmidhi no. 3747). His death at the Battle of the Camel belongs to historical narrative: we report the facts without taking sides.
Talha embodies the believer who 'fulfils his vow': faithfulness held to the point of self-giving. His generosity — which earned him the name al-Fayyad — and his courage at Uhud recall that true greatness is proven in sacrifice, not in words.
Il est, parmi les croyants, des hommes qui ont honoré leur engagement envers Allah. Certains, fidèles à leur promesse, sont tombés en martyrs, tandis que d’autres attendent toujours sans jamais se dédire.
