Talut

Talut is the king God designated to lead the children of Israel into battle. Although he was neither wealthy nor of high birth, God chose him for his knowledge and strength. His story teaches that the worth of a leader lies in his qualities, not his fortune.

The children of Israel asked their prophet to designate a king to lead them into battle. God chose Talut. But the people were astonished: how could this man, who was not wealthy, reign over them? The prophet replied that God had chosen and favoured him with knowledge and physical strength, for God grants sovereignty to whom He wills.

The sign of his election was the return of the Ark of the Covenant, carried by the angels. Then, marching toward the enemy, Talut tested his troops' obedience at a river: those who drank from it would not be of his number, except those who satisfied themselves with a sip. Most drank their fill; only a small troop resisted.

It was with this handful of hardened believers that Talut confronted the army of Goliath. And it was in his ranks that the young David killed the giant.

Talut teaches that God elevates whom He wills, according to merit and not rank. The trial of the river also shows that the true strength of an army is not numbers, but discipline and faith: a small constant troop is worth more than a large undisciplined one.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَدْ بَعَثَ لَكُمْ طَالُوتَ مَلِكًا

Leur prophète leur dit : « Allah vous a désigné Saül comme roi. » Ils rétorquèrent : « Comment pourrait-il régner sur nous alors que nous avons plus de droits que lui au trône et qu’il n’est même pas fortuné ?! » Il répondit : « Allah l’a élu et favorisé par le savoir et la constitution physique. » Allah accorde la dignité royale à qui Il veut. Les faveurs et la science d’Allah sont infinies.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ مُبْتَلِيكُم بِنَهَرٍ

Lorsque Saül et ses troupes se mirent en marche, celui-ci leur dit : « Allah va éprouver votre obéissance par une rivière. Quiconque s’y désaltérera ne fera pas partie de mes fidèles, tandis que celui qui s’en abstiendra, ou se contentera de boire l’eau qu’il aura puisée dans le creux de la main, en fera partie. » Mais, à l’exception d’une poignée d’hommes, tous s’y désaltérèrent. Lorsque Saül et les croyants qui l’accompagnaient eurent traversé la rivière, certains dirent : « Nous ne sommes pas en mesure aujourd’hui d’affronter Goliath et ses troupes. » A quoi répliquèrent ceux qui avaient la certitude de rencontrer leur Seigneur : « Que de fois, par la volonté d’Allah, une petite troupe a triomphé d’une grande armée. Allah est avec ceux qui font preuve de constance. »
