The Faithful Dog of the People of the Cave

The Dog of the Cave

Summary

The dog of the People of the Cave is the animal that accompanied the believing young men in the cave. The Quran shows it 'stretching its paws at the entrance' during their sleep that lasted centuries (18:18), and mentions it when recounting the dispute over their number (18:22). The Quran does not name it; tradition calls it 'Qitmir,' an unestablished name.

The Story

The dog appears in the story of the People of the Cave, the believing young men who took refuge in a cave fleeing persecution and whom God kept asleep for centuries. Their dog accompanied them.

The Quran shows it 'stretching its paws at the entrance' throughout its companions' sleep; the sight was too awe-inspiring for any onlooker to dare approach (18:18).

Then when people disagreed about the number of the cave's companions, the Quran mentioned the dog in each hypothesis: 'three, their dog being the fourth... seven, their dog being the eighth' — before cutting off the debate: 'My Lord knows best their number' (18:22). The dog is the only animal the Quran mentions alongside mention of saints.

The Quran does not name the dog. Popular tradition calls it 'Qitmir,' but this name is not Quranic and belongs to transmitted accounts (Isra'iliyyat). We refer to it as a narration, not an established fact. The exact number of the cave's companions — and thus the dog's position (fourth, sixth or eighth) — is precisely what the Quran forbids asserting: 'My Lord knows best their number' (18:22).

The Lesson

The dog of the People of the Cave reminds us that faithfulness has its place in the company of believers: a simple animal, through its loyal companionship, was found mentioned in the Quran alongside the fate of these young men whom God preserved. The verse also teaches not to get lost in futile debate about details and to entrust their knowledge to God.

Quran Verses

18:22
