The Tribe of the Prophet ﷺ, Guardians of the Ka'ba

Quraysh

قريش

Summary

The Quraysh were the most powerful tribe of Mecca, guardians of the Ka'ba and masters of the great trading routes. It is the tribe of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Quran dedicates a short surah (106) to them, recalling an immense blessing: God ensured their security and sustenance, and in return invites them to worship the Lord of the Ka'ba. Yet it was the chiefs of Quraysh who led the harshest opposition to the Prophet ﷺ in Mecca.

The Story

THE SURAH QURAYSH — The Quran devotes an entire surah to this tribe (the 106th). It recalls two favours: their unity and their 'winter and summer journeys' (trading caravans to Yemen and Syria), and the security they enjoyed thanks to the prestige of the Ka'ba. 'Let them worship the Lord of this House Who has fed them against hunger and made them secure against fear' (106:3-4). The message is clear: you are nourished and protected by God — so worship Him alone.

THE LINK WITH THE ELEPHANT — This surah follows immediately that of the Elephant (105), and many exegetes read them together: God protected Mecca and the Quraysh from the army of Abraha (the Year of the Elephant), thus ensuring their security and prosperity. Surah Quraysh draws the consequence: acknowledge this blessing through worship.

GUARDIANS OF THE KA'BA — The Quraysh derived their prestige from their role beside the Ka'ba, the sanctuary built by Ibrahim and Isma'il. They maintained it and welcomed pilgrims — an immense honour throughout Arabia.

THE TRIBE OF THE PROPHET ﷺ — The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ came from Quraysh, from the Banu Hashim clan. But this earned him no favours: it was precisely the notables of Quraysh (Abu Jahl, Abu Lahab and others) who led the most relentless persecution against him during the Meccan years, before many embraced Islam after the conquest of Mecca.

The Quraysh are named in the Quran (Surah 106). The link with the Surah of the Elephant (105) — the security of Mecca after Abraha's failure — is the view of many exegetes. The historical details (clans, role beside the Ka'ba, opposition to the Prophet ﷺ) belong to the Sira (prophetic biography) and are well established. NB: individual Qurayshi figures who opposed the Prophet ﷺ (Abu Jahl, Abu Lahab) have their own profiles.

The Lesson

The Quraysh offer a lesson on ingratitude: showered with security and sustenance, guardians of the most sacred sanctuary, they were best placed to recognise God — and yet many of their chiefs were the first to reject His Messenger. Privilege does not guarantee faith; sometimes it blinds. The surah brings them back to the essential: everything you have comes from God, so worship Him.
